It was a coincident of loosing her beloved
dog did May started putting her later thoughts into actions
to protect "animal dignity." We live in a very
wealthy society. Each and every one of us has different
values and desires. But for many animals, they are already
very satisfied if they have a roof to sleep under and
are not starved. |
| Warmth and food is the
basic needs of every human being, this basic need is
also the basic needs for domesticated animals. Just
think, when we have enough to eat and a warm bed to
sleep in, there are many poor and abandoned animals
out there, trying to survive on our garbage. |
It is because of the experience of losing
her beloved dog, May fully recognizes the feeling of these
poor and abandoned animals, and their difficulties in staying
alive. Due to this feeling, a desired to help these animals
began to grow inside her. At the beginning, there were no
organization as such. Slowly, meeting many who share the same
value towards animals, the "Animal Re-home Services"
was established. This organization is a non-profit making
organization with the ultimate aim to help those abandoned
animals find a new "home." In addition, we are collecting
donations to pay for the spraying and castration fee of these
animals and to provide food for them in their temporary shelters.
| The problems with stray animals are
serious and the sad truth behind the problem is that,
many people who decide to keep an animal do not consider
the burden fully. Keeping a pet is a lifetime business
and commitment. But many owners sadly consider these animals
as a chattel. May be because these animals passed their
baby cute stage, or because of other problems (eg. illness
of the animal or living standard and place), the owners
usually give up these animals very easily, some even just
dump them on the streets. |

| One of the aims of the
organization is to help these abandoned animals in finding
them a new home, and in the meanwhile, provide a temporary
shelter for them and to provide them with the basic needs
of warmth and food. And that is also how our organization
got its name. |
Many of our shelters are situated in the
New Territories and around very old villages where transportation
is bad. It is because of this, we need many helping hands
when clearing the shelters or delivering food to these shelters.
This is especially the case with the shelter situated in Fo
Tan, where the shelter is on the hillside. To get there, walking
200 or so uneven steps is a must. It is of course noted that
in order to take care of these animals, love, patience and
kindness are the must ingredients. Up to date, we have around
1500 dogs, and around 85% of them are mongrels. In the pass
three years, we have successfully re-homed 300 or so dogs,
however, less than 10% of them are mongrels. This is not the
only worry. The birth rates of these mongrels are astonishing,
with each bitch giving birth to another 5 or 6 puppies. This
is obvious a nightmare to all of us, therefore, we have started
and tried to raise funds to have these animals sprayed and
castrated, as to limit the burdens of the shelters.
On the truthful side of life, we, the organi
z ation had ran into my problems and depressing situations,
but with our belief to protect "animal dignity,"
we have lasted this long, and our spirit will keep on going.
We have been helping 6 animal shelters up to this moment.
In the past 2 years, the number of abandoned animals in these
shelters have shoot up from 200 or so to 1500 or more. The
problems of stray animals are escalating but the money and
resources to solve the problem is total beyond our own hands.
But we still hope we can do all we can, and do our best to
help these poor animals, to provide them with a temporary
shelter and a glean hope.
